Dear Geta

You have just finished high school and are looking forward with excitement and trepidation to going out into the big wide world and starting university.

During your first semester, treat it just like school. Be there most of the day. Don’t take on too much. Find a part-time job as soon as you can and save like hell. Don’t let your parents ever get their hands on your money. Never disadvantage yourself financially for the benefit of your parents or anyone else.

Follow the inspirations and intuitions as they come to you. This is your only true divine guidance. Stop seeking your parents’ approval and love. You will never receive it. They are self-obsessed just like most other human beings.

Continue your singing lessons and your gymnastics. These are true expressions of the creative and disciplined parts of you.

Learn to make friends, in whom you can confide. Life is not a solitary journey. It is always going to be about spending time in conversation with people of depth.

Use this first year at university to practice having a balanced life – not too much focus on study or work. Make time for prayer and meditation too. This is a lifelong practice that will guide you through the ups and downs in life as well as build a strong faith.

Learn to laugh at yourself. It makes life so much more enjoyable. Learn to identify your feelings and feel them. Remember there are no good or bad feelings. All of them pass given time.

Nothing and no one in life is set in concrete. Everything and everyone changes. People grow, move away. Situations never last. Everything and everyone evolves and that includes you.

There is nothing in life to be scared of really. Even the blackest of times work out in the end. No amount of thinking and planning on your part is going to change either a situation or a person. The only things you need are time, patience and to let go of what you think the solution should be.

Go easy in life. Be observant and watch out for crossroads. Don’t always travel on the straight road. Sometimes you will need to stop and have a rest or take a smaller windy path.

Live in faith that you will be taken care of. Above all, “to thine own self, be true”!
